Detroit Lions news, articles and opinions

After an abysmal 1-6 start that often featured an offense who couldn’t move the ball and an offensive line unable to hold up under pressure, Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell announced that the team has fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. Offensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn, son of coaching legend Jim Washburn and his assistant, Terry Heffernan were also let go.

Lombardi, the grandson of NFL legend Vince Lombardi, was in his second year as offensive coordinator. He had no prior experience as a coordinator, previously serving as quarterbacks coach for Drew Brees in New Orleans.

Inexperience was a question following his signing and the move today proves that he may not be ready to assume such a big role in the NFL.

The Lions promoted current quarterback coach, Jim Bob Cooter to assume the position as coordinator and play-caller. Cooter previously worked under current Bears coach John Fox as Peyton Manning’s quarterback coach in Denver and was denied an interview with the Bears this off-season for their vacant offensive coordinator position.

The moves made today were geared towards getting Stafford and the Lions offense back on track. It had become evident that the play-calling had become too conservative and a change needed to be made. If the Lions can’t play more inspired football, the next change could be at the head coaching position.
