In a move to bolster depth, the Lions swapped kicker Kyle Brizda for tight end Tim Wright with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This marks the second straight off-season Wright has been traded, being shipped to New England last training camp for guard Nick Mangold. Wright’s stay in New England was brief and he was waived during the season and claimed by Tampa Bay.

Brizda, a native Michigander and rookie from Notre Dame, was one of the preseason standouts for the Lions this year, showcasing a powerful leg. Brizda consistently flies kickoffs out of the end-zone and has 60+ yard potential in his leg. Had the Lions not signed Matt Prater in the off-season, Brizda would’ve earned himself the starting job with his performance this offseason.

In Wright, the Lions add another pass-catching tight end to their offense. The move is somewhat puzzling since the tight end position is one of the deepest on the team. Joseph Fauria is currently slotted as the third tight end on the roster and he has been somewhat quiet in the preseason. If there is an injury lingering for him or the Lions decide to part ways, Wright could play a role in the offense.
