Detroit Lions news, articles and opinions

Lions GM Martin Mayhew continues to stockpile draft picks while churning the bottom of the roster, trading developmental tackle Michael Williams to the Patriots today. The deal sends a future 7th round to the Lions for a player who might not have made the final roster. Detroit made a similar move at the beginning of training camp, trading CB Mohammed Seisay to Seattle for a 6th round pick.

Williams was drafted in the 7th round in 2014 as a blocking tight end and spent the year on the Lions practice squad while transitioning to the tackle position. He seemed to be making good strides, drawing praise from the coaching staff, but ultimately the team decided to part ways with him.

The move bodes well for where the Lions stand at the tackle position. Starter LaAdrian Waddle just recently returned from injury and he must look healthy. The acquisition of Manny Ramirez has given Detroit more flexibility and depth along the line, which will allow them to carry less linemen. Cornelius Lucas has also performed well at both tackle spots and could backup both positions. Currently slated as the 3rd right tackle, rookie 7th rounder Corey Robinson could be a prime candidate for the practice squad.
